Although the holidays are meant to be a time to slow down, we know they can be one of the busiest times of the year. Between shopping, decorating, cooking, and partying, the holidays can feel like a whirlwind, leaving us looking for another break just to rest up. What’s more relaxing than popping your Roofnest up on a beautiful beach? Our December destination of the month is the Florida Keys. The Florida Keys are at the southernmost point of Florida, and you feel like you left the country when you arrive. With one road in and one road out, you’re transported to a Carribean oasis with white sand beaches, clear blue water, and sun for days. Heading into new territory is always exciting, but it’s even better when you 're prepared and know where to stay, what to do, and have your Roofnest in tow so you can sleep closer to the stars. Here's where to camp and what to do in the Florida Keys.

Where to Camp in the Florida Keys

Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda State Park has a historic bridge and award-winning beaches, and is a must when staying in the Keys. Located at mile marker 37, Bahia Honda spans over 500 acres. With an offshore island that provides some of the best snorkeling in the state, you'll want to make sure to grab your fins. While you’re here, there are bathrooms, hot showers, and even a concession building that offers free 24/7 wifi. Whether you want to relax on the beach, see the beautiful marine life on a snorkel tour, or kayak until you can’t feel your arms anymore, this is the place!

Curry Hammock State Park

Curry Hammock State Park is a hidden gem. If you didn’t know it was there, you’d likely drive right past it. With hiking trails, biking trails, beautiful beaches, and the perfect wind for kiteboarders, you’ll have an endless amount of activities to look forward. There are 28 campsites that are tucked far enough away from the road that you can enjoy peace and quiet all night, and you can make a reservation up to 11 months in advance.

What to Do in the Florida Keys

Snorkeling

The Florida Keys have some of the best snorkeling in the country. With thousands of species of fish and coral, you have to get out and explore while you’re there. You can head to any gas station or gift shop and pick up a cheap pair of fins and goggles. Or, you can book a snorkel tour. We know how exciting it is to find your own adventure, but the tours are well worth it. We recommend heading to the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo to see the most diverse marine life. The park offers snorkel tours starting at $30 per person, and can be booked online here.

Deep Dea Fishing

If you've ever been deep sea fishing, you know it’s worth the money. Being in Colorado we get excited over an 18-inch trout. Heading out with Captain Dan of key west fishing connection, you will be using our trophy fish as your bait. Catching sharks, tarpon, and sailfish is just another day on the water to them. With a 100% guarantee that you will catch a fish, that is a guarantee you’re going to have an epic time. So go book your trip now, and tag us in your trophy pic on Instagram.

Once the holidays are over and the eggnog is gone, it's time to head down to the Florida Keys. Safe travels and tag us in all your shots on Instagram @roofnest or use the hashtag #Roofnest.
