FAQ’s

Will a Roofnest fit on my car/truck/suv?

The short answer is YES!

The mounting system for a Roofnest is very simple and modular making it possible to mount the Roofnest onto just about any type of vehicle, trailer, or rack. First, your rack needs to have a dynamic weight rating of at least 120 lbs (Sparrow) or 140 lbs (Eagle) or 150 lbs (Sparrow X). Your car can handle as much as 4 times the dynamic weight rating as a static load (Static is when you’re parked and sleeping in your tent – See here for a detailed discussion of dynamic vs static loads for vehicle racks).

You need to a minimum of two horizontal crossbars that are at least 42” wide for the Sparrow and at least 48” wide for the Eagle.

The shape of the crossbar (aero, round, square) does not matter but they need to be at least 30” apart (front to back) for the Sparrow and 33” apart for the Eagle (36” and 38” apart preferred, respectively).

There needs to be enough clearance between the roof of your vehicle and the top of your crossbars to be able to fit your arm in so you can tighten the mounting hardware.

You can check the width of your roof here (you may have to check an earlier model of your car)

Please see our Installation Instructions for more detailed instructions.

What kind of rack do I need in order to have a Roofnest on my car?

You need to a minimum of two horizontal crossbars that are at least 42” wide for the Sparrow and 48” wide for the Eagle.

The shape of the crossbar (aero, round, square) does not matter but they need to be at least 30” apart from each other (front to back) for the Sparrow and 33” apart for the Eagle (36” and 38” apart preferred, respectively).

Your crossbars should be no more than 3.5″ wide (front to back) to use the included hardware – if your bars are wider, please contact us for suggestions. Also, the included bolts are 2.5″ long so if your crossbars are taller than this, you will need to purchase longer bolts. The bolts you’ll need are metric – M8 1.25 – and they are hex head.

There needs to be enough clearance between the roof of your vehicle and the top of your crossbars to be able to fit your arm in so you can tighten the mounting hardware. This is important when you are mounting the Roofnest to factory installed roof racks as these tend to be “low profile” and can cause difficulties when installing your Roofnest.

Your roof rack should have a dynamic weight rating of at least 120 lbs for the Sparrow or Sparrow EYE and 140 lbs for the Eagle, Eagle EYE, and Sparrow X.

Why are your tents so inexpensive?

You’d be surprised, we get this question a lot! Many of our competitors’ tents are as much as twice the price of ours. To help understand why our prices are so competitive, read on:

My business plan for creating Roofnest was to be able to sell well-made, simple roof top tents directly to the public at wholesale prices. We do this by combining all of the following:

  • We don’t have a dealer network – we sell direct to customers via the phone and web. This allows us to keep prices low because we don’t have to build in a profit for the middleman (the retailer). Retailers are great and can provide a local contact, service, a showroom, and inventory – but all this comes at a cost, sometimes as much as 50% of the total cost of the tent! This accounts for the majority of our low prices.
  • We have a simple tent – no bells and whistles like built-in fans, lights, etc. We have designed our tents to be “everything you need and nothing you don’t”.
  • We don’t offer a lot of customizable options like multiple colors, fabrics, etc etc – this allows us to have a small number of different tents to stock and saves us money which we can pass on to customers as lower prices.

We think you’ll agree that our roof top tents are an outstanding value and do not represent a sacrifice in terms of quality or functionality.

What is so great about Roofnest hardshell roof top tents?

A roof top tent, or Roofnest, is a whole new way to go car camping. Here are several reasons why a Roofnest will make your camping experience better:

– Sets up in under a minute; this is one of the best things – imagine you leave your home late on a Friday after work and head to your favorite camping area. You don’t quite make it before becoming too tired to drive – with a Roofnest you can pull over just about anywhere and pop the tent up in a minute or so and be curled up inside your comfy tent in a few minutes.

– Being off the ground has a number of advantages: Better views, protection from critters, tent stays cleaner, and better ventilation are a few.

– Much better weather protection than conventional tents. The roof is impermeable to rain and the canvas tent walls are 3 times as waterproof as a typical backpacking tent.

– No need to find smooth or dry ground – just park your car and your tent is ready to go.

– The mattress is built in and you can store your sleeping gear (pillows, comforter, etc) right in the tent when it is closed so it’s always with you and always read to go.

– Storing your bedding in the tent means there’s more room for gear and food in your car. Plus – having all your sleep gear up on your roof keeps your car better organized so you can spend more time having fun!

Does the Roofnest come with a warranty?

Yes! See the details below:

The Roofnest Limited Warranty

When you buy a Roofnest roof top tent we want you to have an excellent experience purchasing, installing, and using your roof top tent. We provide a one year warranty to the original purchaser against manufacturer defects covering workmanship, parts, and materials which fail under normal use.

During this initial period Roofnest will correct the issue through repair or replacement at no cost. After the first year, we will repair and/or replace parts, materials, etc on a case-by-case basis for failures due to normal use. Roofnest does not cover problems due to user error, neglect, or acts of God. We will, however, work with you to get replacement parts and help with repair where possible.

If something wears out, where can I get new parts?

We stand behind all our tents and we want them to give you years and years of dependable service. If you have any trouble with your tent after the warranty has finished you can count on us to help repair or replace anything that breaks or wears out – no matter the cause.

We have most parts on hand and can ship out replacement parts the same week. If you need a part that we don’t have on hand we can usually get it within a couple weeks.

Will you install my new Roofnest for me?

We have an installation service that we can mobilize when our shipments come in or when multiple customers are picking up on the same day. The cost for a professional installation is $100 and includes:

  • Assessment and adjustment of your roof rack (please check with us in advance to make sure you have the correct size, spacing, and clearance for your crossbars).
  • Installation of your Roofnest and adjustment to allow for operation of your doors, etc. We’ll work with you to get it right!
  • A run through of the features and function of your new Roofnest including proper steps for setup and take down.
  • Disposal/recycling of all packing materials.

Currently we can only offer this service when we can coordinate multiple installations on the same day. Often when we have shipments comes in our customers are eagerly awaiting their Roofnests and so it is easy to coordinate multiple installations for the same day. Please let us know if you’d like to take advantage of our installation service and we’ll try to get you onto our schedule!

What kind of weather can the Roofnest withstand?

The top of the Roofnest is impermeable to water and so any straight downpour will not affect the Roofnest. The tent walls are very waterproof and will withstand rain and wind quite well. Overall the Roofnest is nearly as weatherproof as your car. Many customers have reported sleeping comfortably through major wind storms, massive rainfall, and even dust storms. Check out this video of setting up a Roofnest in strong winds:

We are in the process of developing a cold-weather insulation package for the Roofnest and this should be available for purchase in the Fall of 2017.

How do I maintain my Roofnest to ensure longevity?

First and foremost, you should ensure that your tent is dried out after extended exposure to the elements before storing your tent closed for an extended period of time. Usually just leaving your tent open for a few hours on a warm, dry day should do the trick.

Depending on how much you use your Roofnest and how dirty it gets, you should clean your tent periodically by first cleaning the insides and outsides of your tent with a small broom or vacuum. Then, with a very dilute and mild cleaning solution, use a sponge to clean the tent material inside and out followed by rinsing with water. Finally, let the tent dry on a warm, dry day with the windows and doors open.

For the zippers you will want to ensure these remain clear of dirt and debris. Periodically you can apply bees wax or other waxy lubricant to the zipper teeth to ensure continued easy operation.

To ensure the tent material retains is waterproof rating, after extended use or cleaning, you can re-apply a waterproofing spray to the outside of the tent material. We recommend the products made by 303 and Nikwax.

How can I secure my Roofnest and lock it to my vehicle’s roof rack?

Many customers ask us how they can both lock their Roofnest to their vehicle and secure its contents.

To secure your Roofnest to your vehicle’s roof rack we recommend the use of Tri-Groove Security Nuts. This type of nut is used in place of the nylon locking nuts supplied with your Roofnest mounting hardware. A special tool is required to loosen this type of security nut and so any would-be thief would need this tool to remove your Roofnest (the socket driver for these Tri-Groove nuts is included with any purchase).

To secure the contents of your Roofnest we recommend locking cam straps such as these. This type of locking cam strap can also be used to lock your Roofnest to your vehicle and so kill two birds with one stone. For Sparrow-size Roofnests, we recommend the 11 ft cam straps and for Eagle-sized, the 13 ft.

Let us know if you have any further questions about these methods!
