ABS-Fiberglass Shell

All our tents feature an ABS outer shell reinforced with fiberglass and molded into an aerodynamic design that decreases road noise and improves gas mileage. The inside of the shell is coated with an insulation layer and attractive quilted fabric to insulate, reduce noise, and give the inside a soft feel. The lower shell is composed of the same materials with a special shape to increase rigidity and stability. Each Roofnest is rated to support up to 650 lbs.

Wall Material

The wall material is a 280gram polyurethane-coated polyester and cotton blend with a waterproof rating of 3000mm (for comparison a typical waterproof rating on a backpacking tent is 1000mm). The fabric is much thicker and tougher than a typical backpacking tent – more like a heavy-duty wall tent. The material provides additional warmth and is quiet during heavy winds due to its weight.

Doors and Windows

The Sparrow has a doorway with both mesh and canvas on both sides and on the rear of the tent. Each doorway can be turned into a shade awning with the included awning poles. The front side of the tent hosts a window with both mesh and canvas layers. The tent can be entered from all 4 sides. The 3 doorways have ladder brackets under them to keep the included ladder stable.

All Roofnests are shipped with a sturdy and lightweight 8.5′ telescoping ladder that can be secured to the ladder brackets under all 3 doorways (sides and rear). The ladder collapses and comes with its own storage bag.

Built-in Mattress

Every Roofnest comes with a built-in, custom-shaped 7cm foam mattress. This isn’t your typical camping mattress. It’s so comfortable, it feels like a real bed. Say goodbye to a poor night’s sleep while camping, and say hello to getting in a good snooze with a Roofnest.

Life changing tent.

In Spring of 2021 I began planning a six week road trip, determined to make use of pandemic space in our lives. My hubby was less than willing to be camping for that length of time and was objecting vehemently to the project. I hadn’t intended to purchase a roof tent although I was aware they existed but I was browsing free-camping site and saw photos of rooftops and had to investigate because it occurred to me that hubby might be more invested in my adventure if he had a new toy. I slyly bought the Sparrow after doing some research for what should best fit us. As predicted, he couldn’t wait to get, unpack and investigate it. We hoisted it stop our “ole girl” - (17 y/o Toyota Sienna XL) and in May 2021 set off for our first extended, self-sustaining 6000 miles road trip around the west. What a blast. That was a year ago and I have a bonafide road tripper on my hands. The Sparrow has made all the difference in how we camp now. Here’s how: 1. We sleep so well. The foam mattress is thick and comfortable and gives an unbelievable-until-you-try -it good nights rest. 2. Sleeping with fresh air and views. The “doors” and “windows can all be sealed (but not advisable since the seal is tight) from rain but the experience of sleeping with wild air coming in is matchless. All the openings have zippered screens as well as a heavy duty zippered flap which turn into awnings with provided poles or can be rolled up. Bring your own views. 3. You can leave your sleeping equipment stowed in the Sparrow while traveling. The hard shell provided enough depth for us to leave 2 full sized sleeping bags, an extra blanket and 2 pillows plus PJs which made a simple set -up ultra simple. 4. Easy to set-up, unlatch and push up. Leave the rest to the hydraulic arms. 5. Takedown is simple too and takes a few more steps but after doing for 3 times it took less than 10 mins (1person) to attain full locked status. Also if you’re vertically challenged as we are, bring a sturdy fold-up stool to help you get the locks done. Especially if tent is on higher vehicle. 5. Ready. Set. Pick up and go. We leave our Sparrow, now well stickered, on the ole girl and are ready to go at a moments notice. Since getting the Nest and doing that epic trip, we’ve been on many shorter trips. A lot of our free time is spent planning for the next road trip. We are 100% HOOKED. I seriously believe if we hadn’t had such a wonderful experience with the Sparrow, we wouldn’t be here. LOVE MY ROOFNEST.

Fills the Gap between Ground Tent and Teardrop Trailer

I've owned my Roofnest Sparrow for two summers, for a total use of about sixty nights. I mostly camp in the Upper Midwest, Great Plains, and Rocky Mountains. Great product overall. Materials: They all seem to be durable. I want this tent to last for years. For that to happen, the initial materials need to be high quality. Also, they need to be repairable. I believe they are both. The ABS plastic shell does not seem to wear at all. The struts that allow it to open are reliable. The canvas continues to be weatherproof. I would imagine that with these simple materials and construction, a body shop could fix any problems that might occur well down the road. The only downside with the materials is that the tent off-gased incredibly. I kept it opened in my garage for a few months, which was necessary to make the smell go away. Customer Service: I called when making the initial purchase and got a generous conversation from the staff. Also had same good experience when calling about mounting an awning. Rooftop Tents Generally Speaking: I think they are revolutionary. Honestly, they really help make trips happen easily that otherwise would be a slog. A lot of people, I think, want something more comfortable and reliable than tent camping, but are not interested in towing a trailer. For those of us in that situation, a rooftop tent is perfect. I've tent camped maybe close to 500 times in my life, often backpacking or bicycle touring. I've learned to like simple setups, so I've been reluctant as a 40-something dad to get into a pop-up, teardrop, or other trailer. But, tent camping has its limitations that finally led me to seeking something different. Mostly, I wanted a setup that would be reliable in all three-season weather. Too often, campgrounds have poorly drained sites. When I'm on a road trip, I want to know that the afternoon's rain isn't going to mean setting up in a puddle. As a dad, this matters. So I started looking at trailers, teardrops especially. But they seemed to start at about $5000, or more with pandemic inflation now. Functionally, they offer nothing significant to me not offered by the rooftop tent. Both are a guaranteed dry place to sleep for two people. Some teardrops have the kitchen hatchback, but I'm happy with carrying two small plastic totes to from my Subaru to the picnic table. The other comparison is with with a pop-up. Sometimes used ones are priced competitively with a rooftop tent. While larger ones to sleep more people, they still mostly just offer a dry place to sleep, especially if you're fine cooking at the picnic table. If you're looking to upgrade from tent camping, I would seriously look at rooftop tents. Think of them as cheap campers, not as expensive tents. They really do offer functionality much more similar to pop-ups and teardrops than to ground tents.

One of the best Festival Tents ever

Just returned from a ten-day, 2000 mile road trip for a music camp and festival in Colorado. Our Roofnest Adventure XL exceeded our expectations. It kept us high and dry, something most of our fellow campers could not say.

Good but hard to close

Overall I really like my Sparrow, however buyers should be aware it is very difficult to close for just one person. There's no information on Roofnest's site that refers to closing the tent.

Adventuring is awesome with the Sparrow

I have had my sparrow for almost a year now and honestly couldn’t be happier. It is perfect size for my 70 pound dog and me! I’ve camped locally countless times and also took it on a two week road trip from the Midwest to the West coast. It is so convenient for road trips, I just pack up all my bedding and clothes in the tent! I love it.

I like it but it’s not perfect

I have the sparrow xl. It is very comfortable to sleep in and was surprisingly warm. The materials is made out of smell of chemical. I left it completely open for a few days to offgas but it still smells a little funky. It was also slightly heavier than expected it is difficult to get on and off your car without 4 people. They should sell some sort of storage solutions also. Finally. It’s difficult to close. Almost impossible with only one person and challenging with two. I love it when I am sleeping inside. It just needs minor changes. Any suggestions to how to close it more efficiently would be appreciated

Not all tents are created equal!

I did extensive research before purchasing this brand. There are many tents out there and all claim the same. I started looking at the materials used, and it was very clear there was no comparison. This tent is what I call a tank, something that can last a long time and do it's job when it's time to protect you from the elements. The mattress is made out of real memory foam, which are not created equal as well, you can tell by waking up fresh, or back pain. Feel free to ruin your future trips by buying aftermarkets, the inevitable future embarrassment is and will be all yours, when you wake up next to your girl, in your own personal kiddie pool..

Sparrow XL

At the height of the Covid pandemic our Sparrow allowed us to cross the country safely. From New Jersey to Colorado. We crossed in comfort and with the ability to stop any time anywhere. Easy set up and take down. Thank you Roofnest for making this possible. Now we look forward to great happy holidays away exploring….

The unboxing and installation

I picked up my new roofnest sparrow yesterday afternoon at the loading dock and unboxed it right there and installed it on the roof of my Subaru Legacy Outback. The shipping container arrived without any damage at all. I was slightly shocked. Upon uncrating the sparrow I was very impressed with the quality if finished on the tent. All parts and accessories were accounted for. My niece and I installed it on my car and were on the road in under an hour start to finish. After getting back home I set up the tent and omg so simple and fast 😍 The mattress is very comfortable. I left it set up overnight to help air it out and get rid of the new tent smell. The team at roofnest were extremely helpful and knowledgeable in answering all my questions prior to the purchase. I will be posting a new review after I use it this weekend. All in all I am 100% satisfied with my purchase and stoked to get out in the backcountry and start using it 😍

Sparrow Rocks

I’m a year into the ownership of the sparrow. I took a three week tour of national parks this past summer and it preformed great. I put it on a Subaru Outback. I also use it on my f150 as a base camp when I fly fish. It’s very comfortable and quick to open or close. Made camping so much easier.
