Climbing.com Reviews The Roofnest Sparrow

Kevin Corrigan, from Climbing.com, and his girlfriend, took our Roofnest Sparrow out on the road for a weekend across Colorado’s Front Range.

As an avid climber, Kevin spends countless nights on the road traveling to find the next perfect pitch. Kevin was tired of sleeping on the ground and setting up and breaking down his tent every night. He fantasized about building out a luxury van but realized that it didn’t make economic sense.

That is when he entered the rooftop tent world, “providing the comfort of a home on wheels at a relatively reasonable price.”

Overall, Kevin said “the Roofnest Sparrow is a solid option for long weekends, road trips, and anyone who doesn’t mind leaving it on their car all the time. At Just $25 a night to sleep on a cush mattress for 100 nights, it’s a reasonable price to pay, and thanks to the Sparrow’s bomber hard shell design, it should last a lot longer than that.”

The Today Show loves the Roofnest!

Carson Daly says Roofnest is “unbelievably comfortable”!

This morning in New York City Carson Daly of the Today Show was chillin in our Roofnest Sparrow during their “Great Outdoors Gadgets” segment.  He said our Sparrow was “Unbelievably comfortable” and even started drinking a beer while enjoying the view from up high. Yep, that’s right – that’s Carson Daly crushing a beer inside one of our tents on the Today Show!

Our tents have been getting a lot of attention lately – especially after we made all the 2018 improvements. A producer for the Today Show found the video review that Bryan Rogala of Outside Magazine did, called him up, and said “We want that tent on our show!”. Great opportunity for a big audience to get turned on to our tents and the whole Roofnest vibe.

Roofnest just got Fridges!!

Haha – that’s right, Roofnest is even cooler than it used to be.

We are stoked to announce our new 12v DC Fridge! Now you can take refrigerated (or even frozen) food and cold beverages with you on your next road trip without ever having to stop for ice! The Roofnest Fridge comes in Gray and (of course) Orange and will be a great addition to your car camping (or truck or van) setup!

Digitally set the temperature anywhere between -13° and +68° Fahrenheit to keep fresh food fresh, cold beer cold, or frozen food frozen. The Fridge can be plugged into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter and has a battery protection function that shuts the Fridge down when your starter (or backup) battery gets too low.

With a 40 liter volume there’s plenty of room for all your refrigerated food and beverages and the low power consumption of the Fridge’s efficient compressor will ensure the Fridge stays running day and night.

That orange is sweet right??

Right now and for a very limited time we are selling these babies for $495 – an incredible price for this sweet bit of kit!

For more information – check these out in our Store!

The new models of our Eagle and Sparrow are finished!

The fiber-reinforced ABS shell in a brand new design

As you know here at Roofnest we are always trying to provide an outstanding value to our customers. We do our best to deliver a top-notch product with the best combination of material, construction, and design while still keep our prices as low as possible given the realities of running a business.

We’ve been slowly introducing improvements into our Basic line – the Eagle and the Sparrow – over the last 6 months. More recently we’ve been working on a redesigned shell and a entirely new construction method to go along with it. Previously we have been molding our Eagle and Sparrow shells out of fiberglass and gel coat – fiberglass is a inexpensive, adaptable, easy-to-work-with material that allows for simple designs and has a good strength-to-weight ratio.

Our new shells will be made by combining the use of ABS plastic with fiberglass reinforcement. We are creating a thin “skin” of ABS plastic with the exact shape we want and then reinforcing the ABS with fiberglass to achieve a better strength-to-weight ratio (ABS is heavy, fiberglass is light). This construction method allows us to create just the shape we want so we can make our tents more aerodynamic and stronger while still not much heavier.

Here is a list of all the improvements to our Basic line of tents:

  • Completely new shell design with new shape, construction, and materials. The new tents utilize a fiber-reinforced ABS shell (previous models were fiberglass only) which has been re-shaped with updated styling and aerodynamics. A thin ABS “skin” reinforced with fiberglass give this new tent the ideal combination of durability, light weight, and strength. Plus, they look amazing.
  • Updated fabric lining making the interior warmer and more comfortable (not to mention more attractive).
  • Full zip closure on the mesh doorways on either side to prevent the intrusion of pesky little insects.
  • The interior pockets are now attached with clips so that they can be removed and attached to the outside of the tent for storage of things best left outside – like shoes and negativity.
  • We’ve updated our closure system to stronger, UV-resistant, webbing straps and cam-locking buckles. We’ve found that of all the closure methods, webbing and buckles are the easiest and provide the most flexibility when you are storing bedding or other items inside the tent.
  • A full 7cm thick HDF mattress with an updated cover which is more durable and comfortable.
  • Larger windows.
  • Updated mounting hardware which is both stronger and compatible with a wider array of roof racks and crossbars.

Introducing our Ptarmigan Insulation system!

Always trying to innovate and improve our customers’ car camping experience, we have been working on an insulation package for our Basic and X model tents…. And it’s finally here!

Introducing the Ptarmigan Insulation system – the Ptarmigan Insulation system is a packable, easy-to-install, synthetic insulation system for both Roofnest Basic models (Eagle and Sparrow) as well as the Sparrow X.

The Ptarmigan Tent Insulation system has vertical zippers at each corner for installation around the gas struts and small metal hooks that easily attach its upper edge to the upper shell. There is a vertical zipper at each doorway for ease of entry and exit.

Once the insulation is zipped and hooked into place, the lower edge is tucked under the mattress to create an enclosed, cozy space.

The insulation can be installed or removed in ten minutes and can be left installed when travelling as long as you’re careful to tuck the insulation and tent material fully inside the tent when closing it.

The system is made from a synthetic polyester-based insulation with a polyester-based covering that is mildew and stain resistant. The insulation and cover are all through-stitched for durability and easy of use. Zippers are all metal and the bottom edge is finished with a durable nylon end piece for long-lasting wear.

Announcing the August Photo Contest Winners!

For the month of August through Labor day weekend we ran an informal photo contest amongst our customers. Just a little creative competition to help give folks some extra motivation to get out there and explore a beautiful place or get up just a few minutes earlier to catch that great morning light.

We had three categories, best interior, best scenic, and best lifestyle/camping shot.

We received almost all our submissions in the Scenic category and the choices were tough!

The number one spot for the Scenic category goes to customer, Brian Green, with this shot of his Roofnest Eagle on his Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Brian also gets special mention for sending us a ton of great photos as entries in the contest – nice work Brian!

The number two spot in the Scenic category goes to Tommy Eustis for this great shot on Imogene Pass in Southwestern Colorado. Imogene is a super scenic road connecting the towns of Ouray and Telluride. Congrats Tommy!!

The number one spot in the Interior category went to Michael Mowery for this “mood lighting” shot in the forest near Telluride, CO. Very comfortable looking Michael!

We’ll be sending the winners one of our inflatable loungers and plenty of high-5’s. Check out the galleries on our website to see some of our other customer photos. They’ll give you a great idea of how versatile the Roofnest is and what they look like on different vehicles – plus they’ll likely inspire you to get out of town and go camping!!

Roofnest Sparrow featured on Digitaltrends

Roofnest just made Digital Trends list of

5 best roof top tents for glamping on top of your car!

Digital Trends has been keeping people up-to-date on new technology and products since 2006. Though not exactly an outdoor focused site, with 60 million page views per month they still bring a lot of attention to a new company like Roofnest so we’re psyched we made their list!

We just got another batch of Roofnests into our warehouse this week so have plenty of stock on our basic models and the EYE. The popular Sparrow X is quickly selling out with just two white ones left and more black and white tents on the way at the beginning of September.

Roofnest Sparrow reviewed on the Gear Institute

One of Roofnest’s customers, Matt Hart, recently published a review of his Roofnest Sparrow on the Gear Institute. Matt’s review highlights the features and technical specs of the Sparrow and emphasizes it’s cost effectiveness and ease of use. The Roofnest is becoming recognized as a comfortable and versatile alternative to more costly solutions for living the #vanlife.
